The Dawson Family of Maryland

[This is one of the better histories out there, so I scrolled through hundreds of page to post our direct lineage.]

Jack E. MacDonald, THE DAWSON FAMILY OF MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA, AND ELSEWHERE http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jacmac/dawson.pdf

1. John Dawson.

Although John Dawson may have been born in England, neither the date of his birth, nor the actual place where he was born, have been satisfactorily determined. He is known to have immigrated into the Province of Maryland at an early date, possibly by about 1670, or shortly before.

Sometime after his arrival, John settled in Charles County, where he had applied for and received a land grant. John, who was styled planter, is believed to have been married twice during his life. He is thought to have married first, shortly after arriving in Maryland, to a woman named Rebecca Doyne.

Rebecca was the daughter of John Doyne who held a land grant on Chickamuxon Creek in Charles County, Maryland. Family tradition, as stated by at least one researcher, suggests that John and Rebecca met aboard ship during their voyage to America, but that initially there were objections to their getting married because of differences in their religious beliefs. John, it appears, belonged to the Church of England, while Rebecca, a native of Ireland, was a Roman Catholic.

Although John and Rebecca are reputed by some researchers to have had seven children, only the five children that are listed below have been identified as either known, or very probable. Their exact order of birth is not known, however. Although Rebecca apparently died in Charles County, Maryland, the actual date of her death has not been determined.

After his first wife passed away, John married for a second time, also in Charles County, Maryland, to a woman named Elizabeth Thirst on 16 September 1690. John subsequently died in Charles County, Maryland in 1712.

been born in about 1677 in Charles County, Maryland. He was later married in
Maryland to a woman named Mary. Edward and Mary resided in that part of Prince
George's County, Maryland that was later formed into Frederick County, Maryland in
1748. According to available deed records, Edward owned a plantation called
"Dawson's Mill Land," which consisted of 214 acres.

On 19 October 1731, Edward and his son, Edward, Jr., leased land to a man named
William Young for a period of ten years. Edward subsequently died in Prince
George's County, Maryland during the following year, 1732. His will, which had been
written on 15 December 1729, was submitted for probate on 28 June 1732 before
the Prince George's County Court. Edward left his plantation to his son, Edward.
Although the three children listed below were named in Edward's will, the exact order
of their birth is not known.

Margaret Allum in Prince George's County, Maryland.

During the November 1722 session, the Prince George's County Court bound an
orphan named Susannah Crawford to Edward and Margaret until such time as she
arrived at the age of sixteen. In 1732, Edward inherited his father's plantation called
"Dawson's Mill Land." Edward died in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1848.
His will, which had been written on 20 July 1747, was subsequently "lodged in the

Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland on 19 June 1730. Although
Edward is known to have been married, the name of his wife has not been
determined. It is assumed, however, that she passed away prior to Edward since
she was not named in Edward’s will. This will was dated 11 December 1805. The
children listed below were named in Edward's will.

He was later married in about 1775 in Maryland to a woman named Hannah. When
the Revolutionary War broke out, Edward enlisted as a Private and served in Captain
Daniel Cresap’s Company of the Washington County, Maryland, Militia. He took the
Oath of Fidelity and Support in Washington County, Maryland on 16 March 1778.

It is currently believed that shortly after Ohio became the seventeenth state, Edward
and his family moved there and settled in Ross County. In April 1805, Edward was
elected a Constable in Ross County. The family later moved west into Indiana,
however, where they appear to have settled in Tippecanoe County. Edward Dawson
subsequently died in Tippecanoe County, Indiana on 28 August 1833. His remains
were eventually buried on the Jack Bryan farm near the Warren County line.
